The Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology truly is an Academy, the only academy for dermatopathology in the world.

The word "academy" comes from the public park near Athens where Plato taught and founded a school for the study of philosophy, it being the place where ideas were spawned, exchanged, and criticized. That is one of the main purposes today of the Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology. Among the others are dedication to extraordinarily high standards for diagnosis of findings in sections of tissue of skin and subcutaneous tissues, to teaching trainees (fellows especially, but also practicing pathologists and dermatologists, medical students, and sometimes even high school students), and advancing the perimeter of the field by generating new concepts, new knowledge, and new strategies for diagnosis.

No dermatopathology unit extant has been more productive in regard to publication in the form of articles and of books. By virtue of this fervor intellectual, the neurons of trainees are tickled and stretched. Much of what constitutes Derm101.com, the leading resource for dermatopathology, dermatoscopy, medical dermatology, and surgical dermatology, derives from that excitement intellectual at the Ackerman Academy.
